April is not only a month for budding flowers and warmer weather; it's also School Library Month, a time to celebrate the importance of libraries in our educational system and communities. As we reflect on the power of literature to inspire and educate, it's impossible not to spotlight the remarkable Misty Copeland, whose journey from ballet sensation to author has captivated audiences worldwide.
Misty Copeland is a name synonymous with excellence in the world of ballet. As the first African American female principal dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, Copeland shattered stereotypes and paved the way for diversity in classical dance. Her grace, strength, and determination have inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations or barriers.
Additionally, Copeland's influence extends far beyond the stage. In her book, The Wind at My Back: Resilience, Grace, and Other Gifts from My Mentor, Raven Wilkinson, she shares the journeys of two unapologetically Black ballerinas with raw honesty and vulnerability. The memoir delves into Copeland's experiences as a trailblazing dancer, exploring the challenges she faced as a woman of color in a predominantly white industry, as well as the mentorship she received from the legendary Raven Wilkinson.
Through her writing, Copeland offers readers a glimpse into her world, revealing the highs and lows of her career and the lessons she learned along the way. Her memoir serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and the importance of mentorship in achieving success.
Inspired by figures like Misty Copeland, 318 Foundation aims to provides high school girls with the resources and support they need to succeed in school and beyond.
By partnering with schools in Louisiana, the 318 Foundation can empower Black girls and historically marginalized communities through mentorship, immersive experiences, and sports. Through initiatives like 318 VISION, our in-school program, the foundation creates a ripple effect of empowerment and positive change, echoing Copeland's message of resilience and grace.
As we honor Copeland’s legacy during School Library Month, let us also celebrate and work towards empowering the leaders of tomorrow. Together, we can create a world where every young person has the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their dreams.
