318 Foundation plays a crucial role in Shreveport, Louisiana, contributing to the overall well-being, social fabric, and development of high school girls in Caddo Parish. At the heart of our three powerful programs lies mentorship and hands-on training, enabling us to meet young girls where they are and provide life-changing experiences that inspire growth, empowerment, and the formation of new networks to open new professional avenues.
Shreveport, like many communities, faces various social challenges, including poverty, education disparities, and community development needs. 318 Foundation launched its flagship program to address the significant educational disparities faced by students in Caddo Parish Schools. Students lag by 10% in learning for each grade, with test scores 1.43 grade levels below the national standard. The largest city in Caddo Parish, Shreveport, grapples with a high poverty rate affecting 24% of residents—nearly double the national average— and disproportionately burdens the youth. While no nonprofit can address all instances of inequality, 318 Foundation focuses on the empowerment and development of high school girls to alleviate the significant opportunity gap that’s grown due to complex social, economic, and educational challenges.
Research consistently shows that children from low-income families are at higher risk of lower academic achievement, with girls facing unique challenges at the intersection of gender and poverty. Studies also reveal that girls from impoverished backgrounds may experience increased stress, limited resources, and inadequate support systems, leading to decreased educational attainment.
Overall, 318 Foundation contributes to building a stronger, more resilient, and compassionate community within Shreveport. Our mission is achieved through our three programs: 318 VISION, 318 ACTION, and the upcoming 318 SPORTS Champions Academy. 318 Foundation is able to meet a wide range of needs, making us integral to the well-being, empowerment, and progress of girls in Shreveport, Louisiana.
